Ceramic veneers , also known as laminates, is the treatment of choice when cosmetic improvements are desired for discoloured teeth , crooked teeth or when teeth present with spaces between them.
Veneers are thin pieces of ceramic, fabricated by a trained dental technician in the dental laboratory. These are fabricated to recreate natural look of the teeth, while supporting and strengthening the remaining tooth structure. It is possible to make slight alterations in tooth position or bring about change in tooth shape, size and /or color by their use.
The consultation visit.
At Smile Care, the experts analyze your smile in relation to your face and will create a diagnostic ‘mock up’ or obtain a laboratory made ‘ wax-up’ model. This helps determine what steps are necessary to achieve the desired final result. You may also be shown photos of how your new smile will look using cosmetic imaging.
The clinical procedure
Minimal local anaesthesia is administered for the procedure. About a millimetre of the tooth surface enamel on the front of the tooth is removed. This creates room for the thin lab fabricated veneer to be positioned .The veneer fits most accurately on the prepared tooth and imparts the new desired look.
At this try in appointment, minor alterations in the veneer can be made to enhance the overall look. This veneer is then stuck on to the tooth with the help of adhesive cement. The bond between the tooth and the veneer is so strong that it restores function of the teeth .
When are ceramic veneers recommended? When original tooth coloured is altered due to trauma, or if the patient desires change of shape of the tooth, ceramic veneers could be the treatment of choice. It is also a good choice for fractured teeth, gaps between teeth, and in some situations where the tooth position is compromised and there are minor bite-related problems. Some superficial stains do not respond well to tooth whitening and a ceramic veneer may be the right solution.
Veneers are highly polished and made of high-tech materials and methodology. They resist coffee and tea stains, and cigarette smoke and routine oral hygiene measures of brushing and flossing suffices. A non-abrasive toothpaste should be used.
After 3 -4 days of use, it is important to visit for fine-tuning or adjusting the bite. For patients who display parafunctional habits like grinding and clenching, a bite plate to be worn at night is recommended.
Regular visit to Smile Care for professional maintenance will ensure long term success.
